Research on an Antipodal Vivaldi Antenna Array for 5G Mobile Communication

2019
The Vivaldi antenna is a good performance tapered slot antenna, which is widely used in design and application of planar ultra wide band antennas. In theoretical research, the spread bandwidth of the Vivaldi antenna can be loaded to infinity. However, in actual processing and manufacturing, the gain is affected by the processing technology and the size of antennas. Based on the classic Vivaldi antenna, this paper effectively increases the main lobe gain and reduces the side lobes by media culling , adding pencil-type slots and adding a parallel 1×8 feed network. Eventually the array resonates at 38GHz and the gain of the array at 38GHz reaches 13.6dB. Although the size of the antenna unit is slightly larger , which results in the radiation pattern main lobe of the array splitting, the size reduction of Vivaldi antennas will lead to gain decreasing, so the gain is similar to a smaller array without a splitting. Considering the simplicity of manufacture, this design is more cost performance.
