Calcium Oxalate in Napier Bajra Hybrid: Trends

2012
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of maturity on the oxalate accumulation in Napier bajra hybrid. Three genotypes of Napier bajra hybrid, two lines of Napier grass and one cultivar of pearl millet were grown. The genotypes were harvested at different stages of growth (50, 100, 130, 150 and 200 cm of height) and processed for oxalate determination. Results revealed that higher oxalate contents were found in the initial stages of harvests of these crops and they showed a linear decline with the maturity of the plant. It may be concluded that the rate of oxalate synthesis was higher during the early stages of plant growth and decreased as plant increased in height with maturity.
