Superradiant Thomson scattering from graphite in the extreme ultraviolet
2021
We study the Thomson scattering from highly oriented pyrolitic graphite excited by the extreme ultraviolet, coherent pulses of FERMI free electron laser. A nonlinear behaviour is observed and fully described in terms of a coherent phonon scattering process. The short FEL pulses trigger the generation of coherent, low-q ($<$ 0.3 {\AA}^{-1}) phonons, enhancing the Thomson cross section by increasing the population of the final photon state. Data at varying scattering conditions provide quantitative information on the generated low energy coherent phonon populations.
