In the ceramics industry support beams made from Recrystallized Silicon Carbide (RSiC) are used as kiln furniture. The decrease in strength of this material with increasing the application time is investigated and explained by oxidation, microcrack formation and microstructural changes, in turn caused by exposure to complex alternating thermomechanical loads. In particular, the irregular thermal expansion behaviour of the oxidation product cristobalite is an important factor in the strength decrease. These investigations on damage mechanisms and additional fracture mechanics analyses can be considered as a basis for making lifetime predictions
