Self-Concept during Early Adolescence

Objective:To explore the different influences of age,sex and habitation areas on each element of children's self-concept during early adolescence.Methods:533 children,477 urban children and 56 country children, aged from 8 to 13 years were surveyed with the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale.Results:①Behavior affect- ed most in children's self-concept of all age groups,sex and areas studied(β=0.343);popularity,happiness and satisfaction affect least among the six components(β=0.171,0.107).②Effect of intellectual and school status varied unequally with age and reached top at 12(β=0.304,0.358).③Physical appearance and attributes,anxi- ety and intellectual and school status affect self-concept differently between children from the urban and rural areas. Conclusion:Different elements from children's self-concept have different influences on their general self-concept a- mong children of different age,sex and areas.
