Indication, Technique, and Results of the Treatment of Carotid Stenosis Patients. Stroke is in 70 % to 80 % of cases of ischemic origin. Extracranial pathology of carotid arteries is responsible for about 30 % of all ischemic strokes. After the first carotid operation, performed on a symptomatic patient in 1953, carotid endarterectomy (CEA) showed good perioperative results in single-center studies. The superiority of surgery over medical treatment was justified in valid phase-III trials. CEA has been established world-wide, yielding a good long-term patency and freedom from ipsilateral stroke. Unselected series of patients showed excellent surgical quality and good long-term results of CEA. Today, thousands of CEA cases are well documented in Europe and the United States, reporting combined perioperative stroke/death (SD) rates of about 2 %. At the Department of Vascular
