Polus, Plato, and Aristotle

In the famous opening chapter of the Metaphysics Aristotle, in his analysis of σοϕία, introduces the important concept μπeιρία, ‘experience’. In the course of the discussion he cites the sophist Polus, 981 a 1–5: κα δοκeῖ σχeδν πιστήμῃ κα τέχνῃ μοιον eἶναι μπeιρία, ποβαίνeι δ’ πιστήμη κα τέχνη δι τς μπeιρίας τοῖς νθρώποις μν γρ μπeιρία τέχνην ποίησeν, ς ϕησι Πλος, ρθς λέγων, δ’ πeιρία τύχην.
