Deuterium NMR Studies of Dynamics in Solids

1988
Deuterium NMR has been used extensively to study the rates and mechanisms of dynamic processes in solids. Quadrupole echo lineshapes provide a convenient method to study processes with correlation times T C ~ 10-3 - 10-8 sec, while the anisotropy of 2H spin lattice relaxation can provide information on dynamic processes in the range 10 -7 - 10-10 sec. Experimental methods for obtaining the spectra are reviewed, and the utility of the technique is illustrated with examples of systems executing two- and threefold hops in solids.
