A Systematic Approach to Scenario Design

2019
Abstract The scenario is the smallest unit of simulation training and is paramount from an educational standpoint. Consequently, scenario design should be given special attention and conducted with consistency and rigor. This chapter presents a systematic approach to designing pertinent, usable, and effective scenarios within a given training initiative. A scenario design cycle includes nine steps: (1) preparing and identifying necessary resources, (2) identifying learning outcomes, (3) extrapolating observable behaviors, (4) determining appropriate triggers, (5) setting up natural feedback, (6) describing scenario content, (7) configuration and programming, (8) piloting, and (9) reflection, evaluation, and revisions.
