Abnormal Presence of Thoracic Legs on Larva of the Alfalfa Snout BeetleBrachyrhinus ligustici

1973
In the past, abnormal development of insect appendages has occurred mostly as a result of conditions differing from those an insect would normally encounter. However, a tenebrionid, Eleodes grandicollis valida Boheman, having on its right side 2 mesothoracic legs plus an additional leg bud was collected from natural infestations (Kramm and Kramm 1971). Kadoum et al. (1967) reported the absence of legs in adult Tenebrio molitor L. after exposing the larvae to an electric field. Baker and Atwood (1969) reported malformations of the legs of Diprion similis Hartig when reared under long photophase (15–24 hr).
