In Rhodes' day, mission colonialism was usually a subtle and indirect process. Decades of proselytizing and human service work served to gradually socialize the 'natives' into acceptance of colonial values, but the missionary bearers of these values-with notable exceptions-typically believed themselves to be acting out of a religious calling separate from the political and economic interests of colonial authorities.
