Low Frequency Bimorph Cantilever Energy Harvester for Pacemaker Applications

2020
In this paper, we discuss the use and design of a bimorph cantilever shaped energy harvester for pacemaker application. The basis of this approach is to find an alternative way to power pacemakers using novel energy harvesters. Different energy harvester geometries such as the cantilever, triangular and rectangular based harvesters were studied. PZT-5A material was chosen as an active piezoelectric material, it was then designed and simulated on COMSOL Multiphysics package. After simulating various designs, it was found that an energy harvester with dimensions of 21mm width, 0.16 mm thickness and 10mm out of plate dimension. At resonance, it yielded 10.7 Volts and 4.77 mW electrical power for an input of 4.88 mW of mechanical power.
