Thames Gateway Bridge - alternatives and options for improving public transport

2008
Recent proposals to build a bridge across the River Thames at Woolwich, near London remain under discussion. Changes in UK policy in relation to climate change will influence the decision making process. Proposals to enhance the role of public transport on the bridge are discussed. Current best practice in other cities across the world are considered in relation to the development of sustainable river crossings. Possible solutions include pedestrian travellators, ferries, rapid transit cable cars, and prioritising cycling and walking. The appraisal criteria used are set out. Favoured proposals include a bridge that serves public transport and freight but not cars, a bridge reserved for public transport / cycling / walking, improved ferries or rapid transit cable cars. The preferred option is rapid transit cable cars. An action plan is provided.
