Infrared Image Enhancement Using Convolution Matrices

2021
Advancement in infrared detector technology from 1st generation to 3rd generation infrared focal plane arrays (IRFPA) has put a lot of emphasis on the development of high performance image processing for improved and efficient infrared imaging systems. It requires image enhancement module to provide better detection capability. The most efficient way to enhance an image is by converting it into a convolution matrix and then carry out the enhancement pixel by pixel. In this paper, comparisons of two algorithms have been presented to enhance the infrared (IR) images. Implementation of Histogram Equalization and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) which helps in increasing image clarity has been also discussed for IR images.
