Whole-genome sequencing analysis of uncommon Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli from cattle: Virulence gene profiles, antimicrobial resistance predictions, and identification of novel O-serogroups

Abstract Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) are major foodborne pathogens. While many studies have focused on the “top-7 STEC”, little is known for minor serogroups. A total of 284 non-top-7 STEC strains isolated from cattle feces were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the serotypes, the presence of virulence genes and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants. Nineteen typeable and three non-typeable serotypes with novel O-antigen loci were identified. Twenty-one AMR genes and point mutations in another six genes that conferred resistance to 10 antimicrobial classes were detected, as well as 46 virulence genes.
