Electrodeposition of aluminum on stainless steel from room temperature molten salts

2009
The feasibility of electrodeposition aluminum on 201 stainless steel from AlC13-EMIC room temperature molten salts was studied. The composition and morphology of coating and the adhesion between the coating and the substrate were observed and analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results showed that whole aluminum coating with high purity can be electrodeposited on 201 stainless steel from AlC13-EMIC room temperature molten salts. The grain size of aluminum coating became smaller and the coating become denser when the current density increased. It was found that anodizing before electrodeposition or heat treatment after the electrodeposition can significantly improve the adhesion between the aluminum coating and the substrate.
