It has been reported that many of standard type of steel-box pedestrian bridges in heavy traffic area of large cities are deteriorated or damaged, and thus are in such state that it would give unsafe and uncomfortable feeling to pedestrians. However, in Korea there is no standard specification applicable for the design and rating of pedestrian bridges. This paper is intended to propose the serviceability limit state model for vertical acceleration and vibration on the basis of the serviceability limit state criteria specified in the Ontario Highway Bridge Code. The MCS(Monte-Carlo Simulation) is used as reliability methods for the reliability analysis using the proposed model, and then the sensitivity analysis is performed. The proposed model and method are applied for serviceability assessment of an existing pedestrian bridge. It has been demonstrated that the proposed model is effective for the reliability-based serviceability assessment of steel-box pedestrian bridges.
