Mr. President, SEG members, and friends: I appointed Stuart Simmons as a postdoctoral fellow in the geology department at the University of Auckland in 1986. This was, in effect, also a joint position at the associated Geothermal Institute. His task then was to study an epithermal gold prospect in central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Stuart came with a very good degree from Minnesota, a great deal of enthusiasm, and a love for the Minnesota Twins. He taught his colleagues at the Geothermal Institute, or indeed anyone willing to listen, about knuckle-balls and the like, whereas we explained to him the mysteries of a rugby scrum. He never quite graduated to understanding the difference between a leg break and a googly, however. His undergraduate looks and dress together with his enthusiasms mildly offended one …
