The First Cadmium Rare Earth Borates CdLn[B5O10] with Ln = La, Sm, Eu

Single crystals of the new compounds CdLn[B 5 O 10 ] (Ln = La 3+ , Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ ) were obtained in silver ampoules at 1073 K by using a B 2 O 3 flux technique. The compounds are isotypic with CoSm[B 5 O 10 ] and contain two-dimensional infinite [B 5 O 10 ] 5- ion chains. Three of five B sites are tetrahedrally coordinated. Cd 2+ occupies distorted CdO 6 polyhedra while Ln 3+ is tenfold coordinated by O atoms.
