Friction, wear and lubrication of plastics

1962
Abstract The paper describes some simple methods of studying friction and wear of plastics at high loads and the effect of lubricating media on the processes involved. The possibility of estimating the efficacy of lubricating media in metal-plastic friction tests of short duration is shown. The modifying (primarily chemical) action of the lubricating medium and its components on the metal surface contacting the plastic may be responsible for reducing friction and wear. Of particular interest is the high anti-friction activity and strong anti-wear action displayed by glycols, and especially glycerine, in tests of friction between plastics and hardened steel.
