Potential Applications of Nanobiocatalysis for Sustainable Biofuels Production

2020
Nanotechnology is a fast-growing domain involving the fabrication and use of nanomaterials. This chapter discusses the technological advances made in the production of biofuels through nanobiotechnology intervention. Robust nanobiocatalysts were successfully developed and employed for a plethora of applications, ranging from biomedical to bioenergy sector. Nanocarbon materials play a critical role in the development of new or improved technologies and devices for sustainable production and use of renewable energy. The applications of various forms of carbon nanomaterials as supports for enzyme immobilization improve the stability and activity of industrial enzymes that has further strengthened the bioprocessing at the industrial setting. Recyclable robust nanobiocatalysts can be reused, thus economising the process of biofuel production. The results of the various studies encompassing use of various novel nanomaterials for immobilizing enzymes involved in oil transesterification/biomass hydrolysis that demonstrate a sustainable biofuel production is very promising.
