Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Ballistic Behaviour of Ceramic-Reinforced Al Matrix Composite Plates

2021
The purpose of this study was to numerically and experimentally investigate the ballistic behavior of ceramic-reinforced aluminum composite sheets and to present an optimal sample. In this study, thickness, percentage of ceramic reinforcement and type of base alloy were considered as the studied parameters. The base alloys are 6061, 7075 and 5083. The percentage of ceramics used in this study is 15, 30 and 45% by weight. These samples were considered in three thicknesses of 20, 25 and 30 mm. In this study, 27 samples were simulated and numerically analyzed using Abaqus finite element software. Then, based on the existing criteria in the field of ballistic protection, the optimal numerical sample is determined. In order to evaluate the numerical results, a laboratory sample was fabricated by percussion casting and experimentally evaluated by ballistics. Finally, the results of numerical analysis and experimental test were compared and the optimal sample was presented.
