Application of life cycle assessment (LCA) in reducing waste and developing co-products in food processing.

Abstract: A method based on life cycle assessment (LCA) is presented and applied to upgrading of Brewers’ spent grain and cabbage trimmings. The results show that upgrading is beneficial compared with present systems. It is also demonstrated that without the systems approach the conclusions would have been different, hence leading to sub-optimal solutions.
