The paper discusses some economic, social and medical aspects of traffic accidents on European transit roads. The author is of the opinion that traffic safety problems should be a matter of concern for the broader international community. Measures to be taken to increase the safety of through traffic include driver training, measures against alcohol and drug consumption, provision of equivalent levels of service on European roads, mutual financing of road networks and unique system of first aid service and hospitals for injured road users.
