Performance Analysis of a Full Bridge Modular Multilevel Converter for High Voltage DC Transmission Using Various Pulse Width Modulation Techniques

2021
The modular multilevel converter with full bridge submodules is becoming one of the most attractive topologies for high voltage DC transmission, since it enables fault handling at a converter level, thus reducing cost associated to DC circuit breaker. This is especially useful in scenarios where fault conditions are more prevalent, specifically in applications that rely on overhead transmission lines. This paper performs a literature review regarding existing pulse width modulation techniques that are applicable for full-bridge submodules and provides a comparison of converter performance for all analyzed methods.
