BER estimation of a MLSE using the union bound

A lower bound and the union upper bound of the bit error rate (BER) of the maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver of an optical on/off-keying (OOK) system is derived in this paper. Combining the two bounds, the BER of the ML receiver can be estimated. (4 pages)
