A Novel Approach to the Education of Fingerprint Experts

Abstract Forensic experts, and especially fingerprint experts, are confronted with increasing challenges. Criticism in and outside the forensic community is increasing and often for a reason; errors and bias effects, and the lack of harmonized training programs, best practices, certification, and accreditation programs are under discussion. A novel approach to the education of fingerprint experts was introduced in Finland with the purpose of reacting to the training and expertise aspects of this discussion. This article illustrates the considerations given to the elements of expertise as the essence of educating fingerprint experts. The program is designed to provide a platform for the career-long development of experts, and its general goals and contents are described. The primary goal is to educate high-quality adaptive fingerprint experts with advanced metacognitive skills and an awareness of personal limitations.
