AN ANALYSIS OF MATERNAL AND INFANT MORTALITY IN DONGLAN COUNTY

1995
In Donglan County, the maternal mortality (503 per 100, 000) and the infant mortality (94 per 1, 000) were higher than the average levels of the province and the whole country. The paper analyzed the causes of the death and revealed that most of the death could be prevented if a simple service could be providid. The study also showed that the high maternal and infant mortality in Donglan resulted mainly from the factors such as the insufficiency of health workers engaging in maternal and child care, low qualification of MCH workers, and the weakening and the low coverage of the MCH programs. In order to reduce the maternal and infant mortality, it is suggested that the function and the village-township network of the maternal and child health care program should be perfected, skills and capacity of these health workers improved, management of the maternal and child care program strengthened.
