APPLICATIONS – STATIONARY | Uninterruptible and Back-up Power: Fuel Cells

2009
Wireless networks are more often the prime source of telecommunication especially in emerging markets and developing countries where wire line networks are rudimentary. The availability of the communication network is important, even when the power grid fails. Mobile network operators (MNOs) still rely mainly on lead–acid batteries or diesel generators as the emergency power source. Increasing energy prices and costs of natural resources put a lot of pressure on network providers to develop energy-saving solutions. Compared to these conventional solutions, fuel cells (FCs) are robust to severe weather conditions and offer unlimited backup at a fraction of the costs. Fuel cells enhance the power (backup) market in the areas where the negative aspects of batteries and generators compromise the use for a certain application and where cost savings can be realized. The application of FCs is driven by various factors. The more of the factors come to materialize, the FC will move into the traditional backup market and create new markets.
