Evaluation of anti-galling property of sulfurized olefins with overbased calcium sulfonates on stainless steel by cup internal ironing test

2017
Abstract The authors prepared sulfurized olefin and overbased calcium sulfonate with well-defined molecular structures and examined their performance by way of a cup internal ironing test, which can simulate the conditions of cold ironing. When sulfurized olefins were combined with overbased calcium sulfonate, anti-galling performance was better than that of sulfurized olefins alone. It was found that, there was blending ratio of sulfurized olefin and overbased calcium sulfonate that was optimal for anti-galling performance. The formation of a lubrication film was promoted because the sulfurized olefin and the overbased calcium sulfonate played complementary roles. Further, the promotion of formation of a mixed film of sulfur and calcium lead to improved anti-galling performance.
