SUMMARY AND ASSESSMENT OF FINDINGS FROM THE PRECURSOR SYSTEMS ANALYSES OF AUTOMATED HIGHWAY SYSTEMS

1996
In 1993, the Federal Highway Administration awarded a series of contracts under their Automated Highway Systems program. The contracts, which totaled 14.1 million, were awarded to 15 separate teams of researchers and were completed in late 1994. These contracts addressed the major issues and risks associated with automated vehicle control on our Nation's highways. The results of these studies indicated that although there are a number of major challenges to be faced, there are no major "show stoppers" to the implementation of Automated Highway Systems. This report is a summary and assessment of the major findings of the Precursos Systems Analyses studies.
