Myocardial bioenergetics were studied sequentially (1-17 months) in 6 chronically volume-loaded (abdominal aorta-vena cava anastomosis (AVS)) and 3 control dogs with in vivo 31 P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and echocardiography to determine the metabolic correlates of structural (hypertrophy and dilation) and mechanical (ejection fraction) changes associated with chronic volume-overload states
