Hypoglycemic and anti oxidant activity of Phyllanthus longiflorus

2013
The hypoglycemic activity of aerial parts of Phylla nthus longiflorus (PHL) was studied against alloxan induced hyperglycemic rats. The activity was assessed by va rious parameters such as blood glucose level and se rum level of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, low density l ipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLD L) and high density lipoprotein. A significant decrease in bloo d glucose, TC, TG, LDL, VLDL and a significant incr ease in HDL was observed after drug/extract treatment. The extr act exhibited free radical scavenging activity on D PPH and superoxide anion free radical and also shown reduci ng property. From the results of the present study, it was concluded that PHL possessed potent hypoglycemic ac tivity, probably by its antioxidant activity.
