Technological Advances for Sustainable Livestock Production

Abstract There are exponential growth demands for animal products with the increasing population, which has proposed changes in the livestock sector. This chapter discusses the environmental problems that threaten the sustainability of animal production systems, and evaluates different technologies to solve this issue. Artificial insemination (AI) and crossbreeding are used to maintaining the sustainability of animal production systems for decades and they are still the most popular method until now. Modern technologies have been developed recently, such as transgenic animals or developing environmental-friend diets for livestock. In addition, the concept of the farm is modified as precision livestock farming (PLF) is developed. In order to have a sustainable agricultural environment, innovation must be placed in the highest priority in the livestock industry.
