The Enmeshment of the Machine in Complex Governance Processes and Networks

2021
This chapter provides an outlook on the challenges posed in the previous two chapters. The current chapter focuses on the attempts of both Public Administration as a discipline and public administration as a sector to uncover the complexity of governance. Central to this attempt will be the tension between an-ever increased awareness of the complexity inside and outside government on the one hand, and a near-universal, inevitable desire for simplicity on the other hand. The advent of the digital age – in the shape of algorithms and software running on increasingly powerful computers and that process many types of societal data to deliver the information upon which decisions are made – accelerates the evolution of the networks governmental and non-governmental actors are entangled in. This enmeshment should be viewed critically. The chapter offers proposals for future research.
