DESIGN REVIEW AND SAFETY ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS IN ORNL RESEARCH REACTORS

A discussion is presented of the philosophy and experiences of the design review and safety analysis of complex irradiation experiments in ORNL research reactors. The principles and rules of design are outlined and the limitations of their application are discussed. The minor incidents encountered in 1960 to date are described, and the steps taken to prevent their recurrence are discussed. It is concluded that the described safety procedures have resulted in a safe reactor and experiment complex. (D.L.C.)
