Emergency department diagnosis of gynecologic malignancy versus office diagnosis and association with overall survival in a low-income, racially diverse patient population.

e17571Background: Twenty to fifty percent of patients with breast, colon and lung cancers are diagnosed in the emergency department globally. The objective of our study was to characterize the association of clinical risk factors, treatment patterns and outcomes with the diagnosis of a gynecologic malignancy in the emergency room compared to the outpatient ambulatory clinic. Methods: After institutional review board approval, women diagnosed with gynecologic malignancies were identified from the Montefiore Medical Center tumor registry between 2009-2015. Data were collected by retrospective chart review including demographics, co-morbidities, histopathological characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. Household incomes were assigned using geocoding and publically available census data.
