Antimicrobial Stewardship: Evolution into the Twenty-First Century
2021
Overuse and inappropriate use of antimicrobials are the key drivers in the development of antibiotic resistance. Every year, at least two million people in the United States become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria—a fact that has substantial implications for patient care outcomes. Infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria are associated with increased morbidity and mortality and increased length of hospital stay—resulting in a huge cost burden for the nation. Now more than ever before, antimicrobial stewardship is of the utmost importance to optimize the use of antimicrobials.
