Assessment of the Potential Impacts of Climate Variability and Shocks on Zimbabwe's Agricultural Sector

2018
This study aims to increase the understanding of the economic effects of climate change in Zimbabwe with specific attention to climate variability and shocks in the agriculture sector. This study explores the impacts of climate change, and also the economy-wide benefits of a set of priority climate change investments in the agricultural sector. The study assesses the economy wide impact of shocks to the agricultural sector, differentiated by large scale and small holder farm type, on the basis of different estimates of respective projections for the Social Accounting Matrix (SAM). This book is organized as follows: Section 2 of this report provides a relevant background and context on Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, as well as the challenges that climate change poses; Section 3 documents the technical approach of the work, along with the key caveats and uncertainties inherent in a screening-level analysis such as this one; and Sections 4 and 5 document the findings of the study from biophysical and economy-wide perspectives, and Section 6 provides a summary of findings and recommendations.
