Multi-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia [letter]

In a recent article on quinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Pakistan Jabeen et al. reiterate the urgent need to strengthen surveillance of gonococcal resistance in developing countries. Due to huge under-reporting of sexually transmitted infections there is a relative lack of antimicrobial susceptibility data on N. gonorrhoeae in Malaysia. We assessed the susceptibilities of N. gonorrhoeae isolated in University of Malaya Medical Centre Kuala Lumpur from 2002 to 2005 with disc diffusion testing using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Etests (AB Biodisk Solna Sweden) were used to confirm reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin in 2005. (excerpt)
