Therapeutic Efficacy of Ceftiofur for Management of Pneumonia in 23 Neonatal calves

2015
23 Calves were presented with history of dullness, depression, lethargy and anorexia. All calves showed respiratory distress with bilateral nasal discharge, frequent coughing and dyspnoea. The nasal discharge was copious and mucopurulent in 16 cases and serous in remaining 7. Clinical examination revealed increased temperature, heart rate and respiration rate with shallow respiration. Lung auscultation revealed adventitious sound mainly the crackles (moist rales) in 16 calves whereas 7 calves showed abnormal respiratory sounds like sneezing and respiratory grunts. The affected animals were treated with injection Ceftiofur, along with supportive therapy i.e. Flunixin meglumine, Chloropheniramine maleate, Vit. B1, B6and B12and Deriphyline. 17 calves having severe mucopurulent discharge were also given Tincture Benzoin inhalation twice daily for 3 days. The 21 calves responded to treatment after first day onwards. However 2 calves died after first day of therapy. The improvement in respiration rates, decrease in respiratory sneezing and grunt, dyspnoea and nasal discharge were observed on 2nd days onwards. The complete clinical recovery observed after 5 days. Out of 23 animals, 21 (91.30%) animals showed complete clinical recovery after 5 days of therapy and 2 (8.6%) animals died after first day of therapy. Ceftiofur was found to be highly effective (91.30%) in treatment of neonatal calf pneumonia.
