Improved ventilation and temperature control in a nursery

2011
We performed an intervention study in a nursery. We have measured the air quality with as indicator CO2 and temperature in the original configuration. The maximum observed CO2 concentration during a three week monitoring period was 1834 ppm. The average CO2 concentration during the sleeping period was 1266 ppm, which is above the Dutch requirements of 1200 ppm. As intervention we placed mechanical supply ventilation in the sleeping room. This resulted in a maximum CO2 concentration of 1200 ppm and an average concentration of 844 ppm. Further due to the direct supply of outside air the temperature in the sleeping room was lower, which was perceived as an improvement. To prevent overheating as intervention also night ventilation has been applied. This resulted in a 3 K lower temperature in the sleeping room. The mechanical ventilation system was designed as a low pressure system with a specific fan consumption of 0.3 kW/m3. This is a factor 6 lower than modern commercial systems.
