On the eve: questions, doubts about the tankers

1977
As huge tankers travel to Valdez to obtain trans-Alaska pipeline crude oil, they must pass through the Prince William Sound. PWS fishermen feel their million dollar fish industry is in danger from these tankers and the oil they haul. Although tankers are guided by sophisticated Loran-C navigation systems and registered pilots, Alaska is gearing for any possible disaster. Measures include tanker safety laws requiring Loran-C navigation aids, dual radar, and collision avoiders, and the creation of a coastal protection fund. (1 map, 1 photo)
