Efficacy of Dill, Teak and Arjun Extract Against Sheath Blight of Rice Caused by Rhizoctonia solani

2020
Abstract Since many decades practices have been followed to manage sheath blight disease of rice through use of synthetic fungicides mostly due to nonavailability of suitable and effective substitute. The present research was aimed to identify the potentiality or efficacy of natural fungicides obtained from selected plants as an ecofriendly alternative in the management of the disease. In the presented experiment, three plant extracts that is, Teak (Terminalia arjuna Roxb.)-chloroform, Dill (Anethum graveolens L.)-hexane and Arjun (Tectona grandis Linn.)-methanol 20 EC (emulsifiable concentrate) were tested at different concentration 20 μg/ml, 100 μg/ml, 200 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml and 600 μg/ml in vitro to know the effective dose 50 (ED50) required to inhibit 50% of the fungal mycelial growth and biomass production. A pot and field experiment was also conducted with the same extracts to find out the effect of extracts on sheath blight disease of rice and grain yield. Subsequently, the result showed that with increase in concentration of plant extract there was an increase in radial growth inhibition and biomass production inhibition. The result showed that severity and spread of the disease can be effectively managed with the application of plant extracts especially with Dill resulting in higher grain yield than the control.
