Assessment in Field Education: Capability, Competence and Contradictions

2021
Assessment in field education is fundamental to ensuring the capability of social work graduates. Assessment is often identified as a challenge for field educators, particularly when students are struggling with placement learning. This chapter examines the literature and research about student assessment. The purpose of assessment, the evidence used in assessment, and the different factors impacting on the assessment process are discussed, highlighting concerns about the quality of assessment that allow some students who may not be appropriate practitioners in the future to pass placement. The chapter presents specific research and resources about field educators’ experiences of working with social work students struggling or failing in placements. Recommendations and resources are offered to assist stakeholders in the assessment of students on placement.
