중등학교 영어 교과서 읽기 지문의 코퍼스 기반 어휘 뭉치 분석

2020
The purpose of this study was to investigate structural and functional features of three- and four-word lexical bundles used in reading texts of Middle and High School English textbooks and compare the features of three- and four-word lexical bundles with those in BNC Baby. The structural and functional features of the lexical bundles were explored through concordance analysis by the modified versions of Biber et al. (2004)'s taxonomy. The results indicated that reading texts of High School English textbooks (HSET) used more diverse words compared to the texts of Middle School English textbooks (MSET). The frequency analysis of the lexical bundles revealed that HSET used more lexical bundles than the MSET counterpart. The structural analysis of the lexical bundles showed that lexical bundles that incorporated NP/PP were the most dominant in both HSET and BNC Baby, whereas lexical bundles that incorporated VP were pervasive in MSET. The functional analysis indicated that all three corpora relied heavily on referential expressions, most of which were dominantly used in institutional writing (Biber & Barbieri, 2007). In line with the previous studies, the findings also imply that it is necessary to make the list of high frequency lexical bundles present in secondary school English textbooks. Following this, teachers can then make use of the high frequency lexical bundles in classes in order to help students enhance their communicative competence.
