'RETROCAT' IN SITU CATHODIC PROTECTION OF EXISTING DUCTILE IRON PIPES

1991
Corrosion of externally unprotected ductile iron pipes in localities with aggressive soil conditions is becoming a significant problem. Repair and replacement costs are high and failures cause supply interruptions to customers and inconvenience to the public at large. Trials have been undertaken to develop a non-intrusive method of application of sacrificial anode cathodic protection to in situ pipelines. They have two objectives:- 1) To show that retrospective application of a sacrificial anode cathodic protection system would retard corrosion, and 2) To develop a practical and economic method of installation. The authors contend that these objectives have been achieved. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 853316.
