Opening Dynamic Managerial Capabilities

Dynamic managerial capabilities have emerged as a promising construct to bridge different orientations in dynamic capabilities research and to better understand the microfoundations of dynamic capabilities. However, the linkages between managerial cognitions and routinized adaptation (based on dynamic capabilities) – or between cognitive schemata and organizational routines, respectively – need further clarifications. Also the linkages between dynamic managerial capabilities and the organizational settings in which they are put into action are still not well understood. Our symposium brings together empirical and theoretical papers that address these gaps by applying multilevel perspectives and by drawing upon insights from organization theory. We believe that these two ways to open up dynamic managerial capabilities will generate fresh insights to better understand managerial actions and how they facilitate strategic change.
