Vocabulary is one of the language components that has important role in
increasing four skills in English; speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Having
insufficient mastery in vocabulary causes difficulties for students to communicate
their ideas both orally and in written forms. Moreover, the students also have
problems in understanding the written and spoken ideas in terms of reading and
listening. Because of the importance of vocabulary, it requires teaching and
learning process with a suitable media that invites students‟ participation. Wattpad
Application is a media - based IT offers relax and pleasant atmosphere that can
support students learning. The study was done to verify whether or not the use of
Wattpad was effective to teach students‟ vocabulary mastery.
The formulation of the research problem was “Is there any significant
difference vocabulary mastery of the students‟ taught by using Wattpad
Application and those taught by using a conventional method?”.
Research method: 1) the research design of this study was Quasi
experimental with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was first
grade students of SMAN 1 Karangan Trenggalek, 3) the samples were X IPA 2
class consisted of 36 students and X IPA 4 class consisted of 36 students which
were selected by using purposive sampling, 4) the research instrument was test, 5)
the data analysis was using independent T-test.
The finding showed that Wattpad Application was effective to improve
vocabulary mastery of the students in experiment group. The effectiveness of the
Wattpad Application can be shown in the following descriptions: 1) the mean
score of experimental group in pre-test was 50.56, and after being taught using
Wattpad Application the mean score of post-test was 77.36. The difference gained
of the mean score was 26.8. 2). Meanwhile the mean score of control group in
pre-test 43.75, and after being taught using conventional the mean score of post
test was 59.17. The difference gained of the mean score was 15.42. From the
difference the gained mean score between pretest and post-test of the two groups,
it revealed that the experimental group got better improvement of the mean score.
3) the result of computing the mean score of post-test of the two groups using
independence t-test at significance level of 0.05 showed that the significance
values (sig-2 tailed) was 0.00 smaller than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05). The result indicated
that there was significant different mean score in vocabulary of the experimental
group taught using Wattpad Application and those taught by using conventional
method. Consequently, Null hypothesis saying that there is significant difference
mean score in vocabulary of the students taught by using Wattpad Application and
those taught by using a conventional method at the first grade of SMAN 1
Karangan was rejected and Alternative hypothesis saying that there is nosignificant difference mean score in vocabulary of the students taught by
using Wattpad Application and those taught by using a conventional method at the
first grade of SMAN 1 Karangan was accepted. Thus, ONLINE Wattpad
Application was effective media to teach students‟ vocabulary.
