Abstract Heavy metals from industry pose threats to human and environmental health. Microalgae are prime candidates to remove heavy metals from water and soil due to their metal-binding affinities, high growth rates, and contamination tolerance. Strain selection and composition of resulting contaminated biomass must be considered for downstream processing.
